A Book A Day, Keeps Reality Away

Okay, Lord knows I don't have the time to finish a book in one day but I'd really love to! Lately, life has been overwhelming me with responsibilities. Especially with school, work, bridal makeup appointments and of course my blog. So let's make goals a little more realistic.. how about a book once a week? I've always loved to read, especially poetry, romance novels, action & adventure.. you name it! I ALWAYS keep a book in my bag just incase I'm waiting around. Below are the books that I absolutely adore, recommend & am currently loving!

#1 - Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichi  "Ifemelu and Obinze are young and in love when they depart military-ruled Nigeria for the West. Beautiful, self-assured Ifemelu heads for America, where despite her academic success, she is forced to grapple with what it means to be black for the first time. Quiet, thoughtful Obinze had hoped to join her, but with post-9/11 America closed to him, he instead plunges into a dangerous, undocumented life in London. Fifteen years later, they reunite in a newly democratic Nigeria, and reignite their passion-for each other and for their homeland."

#2 - Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur "The book is divided in four chapters, and each chapter serves a different purpose. Deals with a different pain. Heals a different heartache. Milk and Honey takes readers through a journey of the most bitter moments in life and finds sweetness in them because there is sweetness everywhere if you are just willing to look."

#3 - We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie "The highly acclaimed, provocative New -York Times bestseller. A personal, eloquently-argued essay, adapted by the much-admired TEDx talk of the same name from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, award-winning author of Americanah. Here she offers readers a unique definition of feminism for the twenty-first century, one rooted in inclusion and awareness. Drawing extensively on her own experiences and her deep understanding of the often masked realities of sexual politics, here is one remarkable author's exploration of what it means to be a woman now and an of-the-moment rallying cry for why we should all be feminists."

Green & Gorgeous Organics

Hey babes!

I know it's been FOREVER since my last post, especially with school just starting and having to find a way to balance my work/blog schedule. BUT I'm back and I'm doing better! As you guys know, I recently moved into my apartment about a month ago. My commute to my job and school is about 45 minutes to an hour away (depending on traffic!). So I'm always on-the-go! I just wanted to share something that has reaaalllyyyy helped me get through these past few weeks.

Green & Gorgeous Organics dry shampoo... what would I do without you?! On days that my hair is looking greasy and flat but I don't have the time to wash or style it, I just apply their dry shampoo and massage it into my scalp.. maybe do a couple hair flips & voila! A clean, refreshing look.

Not only are they perfect for unwashed hair days, they're also certified organic! What I love most about Green & Gorgeous Organics is the fact that they're free of parabens, sulfates and perfume. Their products are also talc-free and vegan!

Before I discovered G&G, I was using Batiste Dry Shampoo. Here's a list of their TOXIC ingredients below:

Ingredients: Butane, Isobutane, Oryza Sativa, (Rice) Starch, Propane, Alcohol Denat, Parfum (Fragrance), Coumarin, Eugenol, Limonene, Butylphenyl, Methylpropional, Linalool, Distearyldimonuim Chloride

First things first, stick to the saying "If you can't pronounce it, don't use it." VERY TRUE. Good thing there's the internet and this girl has done her research!

Butane: A flammable hydrocarbon gas of the alkane series, present in petroleum and natural gas. It is used in bottled form as a fuel.

Isobutane: Some portable camp stoves use mixture of isobutane with propane. Used as a feedstock in the petrochemical industy, very hazardous.

Alcohol Denat: Denatured alcohol or methylated spirits is ethanol that has additives to make it poisonous, extremely bad tasting, foul-smelling and nauseating, to discourage recreational consumption. Denatured alcohol is used as a solvent and as fuel for spirit burners and camping stoves.

Eugenol, Limonene and linalool are fragrances as well.

These are just a few things to keep in mind before using Batiste or any drug store products, as they can be very harmful for you in the long run. Moving on to bigger and better things.. below are the Green & Gorgeous Organics products that I am currently loving!

Lavender & Bergamot suitable for all hair colors

Grapefruit & Sweet Orange suitable for all hair colors

Organic Dry Shampoo suitable for midnight dark hair

Ingredients: Organic Arrowroot Powder, Organic Brown Rice Powder, Organic Horsetail (Shavegrass) Powder, White Clay, Aluminum-Free Baking Soda, Organic Essential Oils

I always have one in my purse for when I'm traveling, commuting, sleep-overs.. whatever it may be. I can't go anywhere without it! Be sure to check out Green & Gorgeous Organics! Their travel size mini dry shampoos are to die for.

Thanks for reading loves & have a great hair day!

xoxo,

Nina

Union Market

1309 5th St NE, Washington, DC 20002

If you live in the DMV area, Union Market is a must! I fell absolutely in love with this place. There's beautiful art around the building. Normally, I hate going to D.C. because it can get congested & traffic is just terrible. BUT, if anyones down to go to the Union Market... I am down! LOL

The first shop that caught my eye was Follain. I can spend hours here just browsing their organic, all-natural wide selection of products! They carry everything such as hair products, skincare products & make-up. I was especially impressed with their selection of all-natural, organic make-up brands. Such as ILIA, RMS Beauty, One Love, etc. My boyfriend; RJ was super stoked that they carried Brickell. Brickell isn't carried in many stores here in Maryland, except for their face washes sold at Bloomingdales. Although their Brickell collection wasn't as big as we hoped, RJ purchased a face scrub from them. I decided to purchase a few products from RMS above since the store associate recommended them. (I'll be writing a review on these items soon!) I'll also be in Nantucket August 10-15th & I hear that they have a bigger Follain store there. So hopefully they have an even larger selection of items! I LOVE this store & will be back to try out more products!

Oh Salt & Sundry, how I wish I had my own place to furnish it with your home decor & soy candles. This boutique smelled like heaven. What really intrigued me was their soy candle selection. I'm a huge fan of soy candles because regular scented candles can be very toxic for us due to the chemicals used. They had all of my favorite soy candle brands such as Apotheke, Sydney Hale CandlesRue de Marli, etc.

In the picture above, RJ & I purchased our drinks from Teaism. I ordered the Iced Chai & RJ ordered the Matcha Sweet Green Tea. The iced chai was a bit spicy & bitter for my taste. RJ enjoyed his drink, considering he has a sweet-tooth!

If you know me, you know that I LOVE italian food... I'm a carbs kinda girl LOL. We decided to try Cucino Al Volo. RJ & I split the Rabbit Ragu & added rigatoni pasta to it. I've actually never heard of eating rabbit meat & didn't know what to expect.. but this was bomb! The meat was so tender & juicy. It tasted like chicken... but so much better, if that makes sense?! If you're in the mood for something new & exotic, check this out! I promise you won't regret it.

My experience with Union Market was greaaat. I'll be back soon & of course review other shops, food places & products! I hear they have a wine shop with a wide selection of whites. Can't wait to be back!

Thanks for reading, babes

xx,

Nina

Resilient Earth

I have tons of jewelry ranging from Tiffany & Co to David Yurman, but no jewelry that was made with  love, wisdom & beauty from Mother Earth herself. On the hunt for something with powerful meaning & inner beauty, I found Wild Solstice.

Wild Solstice has a large range of healing crystals & gemstones. Upon walking into this store, I could already feel a strong aura. Jodi, the founder of Wild Solstice handcrafts all of her jewelry such as rings, bracelets, & necklaces. Her collection is absolutely stunning & her herself brings such a positive energy that I look forward to coming back to L.A. next year to purchase more of her pieces! Below are a few pieces that caught my eye & I just had to buy for myself.

Blue Kyanite (necklace), Rose Jasper (bracelet), Tiger's Eye (bracelet)

Blue Kyanite (necklace), Rose Jasper (bracelet), Tiger's Eye (bracelet)

"Kyanite inspires loyalty and fair treatment to others. It assists in working through disagreements and disputes, and can aid in repairing damaged relationships. It is beneficial in negotiations, diplomatic missions, arbitration and other forms of communication between disharmonious people, allowing disparate energies to move into resonance and find a common frequency. For those who have lost their way in life, or are trying to break a cycle of self-destructive behavior." [Simmons, 224][Ahsian, 224]
"Known as the “Supreme Nurturer,” Jasper is a stone of grounding and stability, providing comfort and security, strength and healing. Its presence balances the aura to a level of wholeness and peace, and acts as a reminder that one is not here on the physical plane simply for oneself, but to bring joy and substance to others."[Simmons, 215-219][Melody, 344-345][Hall, 154-155][Margherita, 505-507]
"Tiger’s Eye is ever vigilant, bringing sharpness to one’s inner vision and better understanding of the cause and effect of each situation. It encourages one to use their powers wisely, and allows scattered information to be brought together to a cohesive whole. Tiger’s Eye supports necessary change in all aspects of one’s life, strengthening the will and clarity of intention in order to manifest at the highest level. It inspires creativity and utilizing one’s talents and abilities, and is superb for stimulating wealth and the good judgement needed to maintain it." [Megemont, 177][Hall Cr, 69, 87][Hall, 288-289][Melody, 646][Mella, 78]
Herkimer Diamond Quartz

Herkimer Diamond Quartz

"Herkimer Diamonds are the most powerful of all Quartz crystals. Being doubly terminated, they have the ability to not only transmit their own energies, but to receive spiritual energy and to amplify and focus it intently. They are reported to be harder than all other Quartz, giving them the strength and durability to handle difficult challenges beyond the scope of other Quartz crystals. What they lack in physical size, they more than make up for in spirit energy."

If you're ever in the area, make sure to check out this gem! Radiate love & beauty...
